We stayed at the Avala hotel for a week on the 9th June, booked as part of a package holiday with Balkan Holidays. We had considered travelling with Thomson, the only thing that put us off was the flight to Dubrovnik which meant a 2-3 hour transfer to Budva. Tivat airport (easyjet flight) is much closer. Having said that, we didn't find the Balkan rep very helpful!
The Hotel was lovely, clean & modern. Although some reviewers have commented on the 'gloomy look' I thought it was tastefully decorated in a style & colour palette deliberatly in contrast to the brightness outdoors. It created a cool sanctuary on a very hot day! We only stayed on a bed & breakfast basis but the breakfast food was very nice, with plenty of choice.
The best feature of the hotel however is its location, situated next to a beach and right beside the walled old town. We almost chose a different hotel in Becici but are glad we chose The Avala instead. The old town area is lovely, very picturesque (unlike some other parts of Budva). There were plenty of restaurants to chose from, all serving good food. Although it may prove cheaper to eat away from the Old Town & Marina area, we felt the atmosphere & surroundings were well worth staying put for. Prices were not bad anyway.
Our room was cleaned to a high standard and the beds comfy. My only slight grumble would be noise from the corridors & the sound of the elevator beeping! (as our room was located just opposite the lift). We booked a sea view room and were not disappointed by the stunning view of the Ocean & Old Town.
We planned a couple of trips to Kotor & elswhere......I would strongly advise anyone wanting a taxi to book it through reception. They use a good value company (VIP Taxis), unlike another firm we used once, that charged more than double for the same journey!
Overall we would highly recommend the Avala as a base for your stay in Budva.
